Students receive instruction from industry experienced experts in each Omaha Veterinary Technician course. The Veterinary Technician Associates in Applied Science provides courses in animal nursing, clinical pathology, pharmacology, lab animal procedures, animal diseases, office management and fundamental science, math and communication. Classes cover veterinary law and ethics, medical terminology, ultrasound and diagnostic imaging, vaccination protocols, clinical tasks, nutrition and much more. Students complete a career skills course and externship prior to graduation.
The objective of this program is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for an entry level position as a Veterinary Technician in veterinary clinics, hospitals or research facilities. Graduates should possess skills in the handling and restraint of animal patients, nursing care, veterinary office procedures, sterilization, radiology, pharmacology, hematology, blood chemistry, parasitology, microbiology procedures, anesthesia and surgical assistance. Students will also have basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, veterinary laboratory procedures, and sterile surgical techniques. The program consists of 177 credit hours completed over 90 weeks and is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
The Omaha Veterinary Technician program lab is meant to give students hands-on training and real world veterinary experience. Computer labs and libraries are open additional hours to provide work-study time outside of classes. Enrollment provides each student online resources such as library services, a student portal, email and online companion courses.
Maximum class size is 30 students. Theory classes are limited to a 30:1 student/teacher ratio and labs are limited to a 20:1 ratio.
Career Outlook
“Pet owners are becoming more affluent and more willing to pay for advanced veterinary care because many of them consider their pet to be part of the family,” according to the United States Department of Labor. This growing adoration of pets will likely continue to increase the demand for veterinary technician jobs.
