Diesel trucks and equipment are a driving force in today’s economy.  Opportunities for trained professionals are increasing (http://www.bls.gov/ooh/Installation-Maintenance-and-Repair/Diesel-service-technicians-and-mechanics.htm) as Diesel continues to be the standard in heavy equipment.  Vatterott College provides hands-on practical diesel mechanic training in industry-current facilities.  Our instructors educate students in diesel fuel engines and fuel systems, electronic systems for medium and heavy duty trucks and steering and suspension.  Graduates of this program may pursue careers in fleet truck maintenance, dealership mechanic or one of many other opportunities in the trucking industry.

The Diesel Mechanic program at Vatterott College in Des Moines offers students experienced instruction, as well as hands-on diesel mechanic training. The Associates of Occupational Studies in Diesel Mechanics will introduce students to fundamental diesel mechanic concepts, as well as an overview of electrical systems for medium to heavy duty trucks. The Diesel Mechanic course then progresses toward more advanced topics, such as diesel engines, fuel systems, steering, suspension, and more. Students receive hands-on diesel mechanic training through labs and an externship.

The objective of the Diesel Mechanic program is to prepare the graduate for entry-level employment as a diesel mechanic or diesel technician, working on heavy trucks in a fleet or dealership, or in a related position within the trucking and transportation industry.

This course consists of 70 weeks with 78 quarter credit hours of theory and lab and 13.5 quarter credit hours of Applied General Education. Each term is 10 weeks in length for a total of 91.5 quarter credit hours.

Student must be able to lift 75 pounds. In addition, past criminal history will be reviewed and may have a negative effect on the ability to obtain employment in this field. Prior to hiring, most employers will conduct a criminal background check, drug testing, and review of a Motor Vehicle Record.
